DEICIDE - The Second Coming
"Deicide have returned with their first album to not include the Hoffman brothers on guitar. Bassist & vocalist GLEN BENTON shared his opinions on The Stench Of Redemption: “It’s like a Christmas tree that’s finally got lights on it. It’s like a cake that finally gets frosting. To me it sounds more like a finished product.” On Jack & Ralph joining: “I’ve known them guys for ages. There was no auditioning. Jack came out and learned the set over a weekend & Jack’s like Ralph needs a job and I’m like well tell him to bring his ass over, so that was how that happened.” What’s most important when bringing in new members? “Just being able to do your job & not having too many hang-ups where it gets in our way of doing business.I don’t give a shit what you believe in or what your deal is. As long as you show up and play guitar that’s all I give a fuck about. I’m not gonna lump everybody into me, I want people to be individuals & speak for themselves & be professional. After dealing with amateur bullshit for so many years I just want to be professional and get rid of the stigmatism that those two assholes brought upon this band.” Does getting along better affect the outcome of the music? “Oh yeah! When we get together it’s a fuckin’ comedy show. We all laugh,we all have a good time. It’s stress free, nobody’s walking on pins & needles trying to do your job. It’s great, I fuckin’ love it. That’s why I’m still doing it now, cause now it’s fun again." (Joe D./Metal Hell)

Stephen Pearcy "It's Not Just A Job, It's An Adventure"
Metal Hell spoke with Stephen on August 7th & asked his thoughts on the recent (VH1) TV appearances he's made. First off, I asked about the part in Ratt; Behind The Music where they blame Robin Crosby for playing an out of tune guitar (in Tokyo): "It's interesting how they dwelled on such ridiculous matters on a couple of 'em, like myself, oh he forgets cities. Well yeah, I'm not the only one. But on the topic of Robin, his crew guy probably gave him a wrong guitar & it's not his fault, we're out there just doing our thing & you hire & pay somebody to make sure that doesn't go down, so it can't be put on Robin, even though it was a topic of subject matter for that Behind The Music. There was no fault on his part. He was the King doing his job."

I asked about the shot where he's seen falling 10 feet from the stage
& what he remembered about that?
"Not having a knee cap (laughs). I'll tell ya, that's the first time I actually saw that and fortunately I didn't go head first off because it wasn't a matter of intoxication, it was a matter of walking down a plank at a huge gig with tons of lights in your face & there's no monitors at the end & no barrier except a little wooden lip & people thought, oh what an idiot he jumped. No, no, even in my my most intoxible situations on the road I would always watch my step & have control but when that incident happened there was literally no barrier, no security out there, there was no stop sign or monitors & that's what happened. It was not good to see & not good to live but it was not at all intentional. I went into shock. It's not just a job it's an adventure man, it's war out there."

Then onto the Heavy: The Story Of Metal documentary, I asked him to elaborate on his quote about how Metallica didn't see all L.A. bands as a happy family; "Metallica, I give them all due respect. They were the under-dog in the so called 80's hair-gig & they stuck to their guns & became one of the biggest bands, if not the biggest rock band around in the world. Despite their opinions on the scene it's justifiable because they couldn't get done what they wanted to until they decided hey we've gotta get out of this. It's just like me when I first moved Ratt up to LA, it's like you've gotta make the moves, you've got to do things. We actually knew them a ong time ago & we played a show together at The Day On The Green (festival) in San Francisco years back but I can understand their situation. I would've done the same thing & had the same sentiments."

*THE ESOTERIC are continuing work on "Subverter", the band's forthcoming, second release for Prosthetic Records.

"We've been having a great time recording with Paul Malinowski," vocalist Steve Cruz comments on the band's official web site. "The sounds he has been getting are amazing and add so much to these songs. We feel like we are making the record we want to make and this time everything is more potent than ever. Each song stands on its own and there is much more variation and intent in all departments."

The cutting-edge outfit began recording May 8 at Black Lodge Recording in Eudora, KS with producer/engineer Paul Malinowski (SHINER, OPEN HAND). The follow-up to 2005's critically-acclaimed debut, "With the Sureness of Sleepwalking", will be mixed at KCMO's West End Recording Studios. Kristen Ferrell and Empty Design will be handling artwork for the new record, which will also feature a guest spot from vocalist Steve Tulipana (SEASON TO RISK, ROMAN NUMERALS). "Subverter" is currently slated for a tentative fall 2006 release through Prosthetic.

*SATYRICON Drummer FROST - "For Many People Black Metal Means Fast Music & That's Not The Way It Should Be"

In a recent interview with Metal Hell Satyricon/1349 drummer Frost speaks about his view on modern black metal drumming.

"I think that the tempo should be adapted to the songs & to the material. I think that blastbeats would feel a bit out of place on an album like this. It's a drum pattern that takes a lot of attention & gives very little place for dynamics & on an album like Now Diabolical that would be very wrong to give so much attention to just the speed because the focus should be on the atmosphere & on those ideas that were the foundations for the respective songs. Imagine an album like Morbid Tales having a lot of blastbeats on it, that would sound pretty strange.

I think that people should approach the whole black metal genre a bit differently & I hope that Now Diabolical is an album that may contribute to focus a bit away from the technicality of it all. It's possible to release a black metal album of significance without blastbeats in 2006. Black Metal isn't that much about technicality. It can be but it doesn't have to be & that's the important thing. Somewhere along the way people have been steering off the right track I guess.

It's almost like people have forgotten that what is really important in black metal is the feeling & the atmospheres & the dark substance, that's what makes black metal black metal. It's not the speed or how many drum fills you can fit into a song or
how intricate it can be, that belongs to another musical genre. Black metal could be very intricate, very fast & all that but it could also be really slow. It's almost like for many people black metal means fast music & that's not the way it should be. The good old classic black metal albums are usually more based on mid paced or slow
tempos actually with more straight rock & roll beats like the first Bathory albums or the first Venom albums, that's where it all came from & a few people perhaps do need a reminder of that."

MARRIN ERIC AIN of CELTIC FROST
Describes the creative process of 'MONOTHEIST.'

"It was completely different from anything we had done before. To begin with, this wasn’t only about writing songs, this was about becoming a band again, forming a unit, trying to discover what Celtic Frost was about in the new millennium & what it meant to us in the first place back in the day. In one way we were intellectually traveling back. I mean intellectually because we didn’t play any of the old songs to get back into shape. We don’t wanna fall into the classic trap that a lot of bands that are trying to come back do by trying to rehash the old glory days. We didn’t wanna do that. We started out basically writing songs from what we felt. We were experimenting in the beginning much like we did with Into The Pandemonium & then we started focusing in more & more & trying to realize the vision that we had when Tom & me got together for the first time in 2001 and talked about how this should be persued."

Wednesday 13 Exclusive clip by Joe D.
"The Fang Bang record is already complete. I finished it like over a month & a half ago. The songs I wrote in 2 to 3 weeks. I recorded it in a week & it is completely finished other than the mixing & mastering process."
"I think it's a big combination of everything I've ever done. I don't think it's anything like the last record at all. It really has a Motley Crue meets Ramones feel to it. I've always played 3 chords but this is even a more free-er 3 chord kind of record. On the last record there was definitely some metal type riffs going on & this records a lot more straight forward rock & roll, punk, glam sort of thing."
"Right now there's 12 songs that I want to make the record. The very first song is probably the fastest song, called "Morgue Than Words", which is a play on the old Extreme song 'More Than Words', but it's really nothing to do with that song whatsoever. There's a song called "Faith In The Devil", which as I was drifting off one night in some drunken slumber, I was watching TV & I heard somebody say 'hey buddy you gotta have faith in the devil' & I sat up & got my notebook out & wrote down 'You Gotta Have Faith In The Devil.', which is the way a lot of these song titles come to me, either I'm passing out or waking up or in a dream. It usually kinda all revolves around alcohol a lot." - See entire interview in Metal Hell #17

Review: Joe D and I attended this event. Not knowing anything before I walked into the venue. I was pleasantly surprised. Although their tunes were a little more radio friendly than I normally listen to, I like what I heard. Just good Rock N' Roll. Some of the songs where Glam Metal 101. Over all it was nice to see some good rock.
